Art Curriculum

Prep School (Year 2-6)

Students in Years 2-6 are introduced to the basics of visual expression. They explore different materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, and collage. Emphasis is placed on developing fine motor skills, creativity, and an understanding of colour, shape, and form. Art lessons are often integrated with other subjects through the thematic approach, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to learning.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

At Key Stage 3, students develop creativity and technical skills through themed projects. Each year group focuses on a different theme:

  • Year 7: Natural and Man-Made Forms
  • Year 8: World Culture
  • Year 9: Portraiture and Identity

Students work with both two- and three-dimensional media, learning techniques in painting, drawing, and mixed media. They enhance their understanding of colour, form, and composition, while drawing inspiration from the works of various artists and designers.

Key Stage 4 - IGCSE (Years 10-11)

Year 10 students begin with portraiture, using painting and drawing to convey emotions. The IGCSE Art and Design course fosters independent, creative thinking through the exploration of diverse techniques like oil painting, dry point etching, and reduction lino printing. Students experiment with mixed media, large-scale works, and are encouraged to take risks in their artwork. The course is divided into a 50% coursework project and a 50% final exam. We are proud that all IGCSE Art students are continuing to A-Level with ambitions in various creative fields.

A Level (Years 12-13)

At A Level, students engage deeply in the Fine Art pathway, exploring painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. The course allows for greater exploration of themes, ideas, and media, integrating both practical and written work. A Level students create portfolios as part of their coursework, essential for university applications in arts or architecture. They receive full support in building digital art portfolios and preparing for higher education, ensuring a smooth transition to top universities.

Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs)

At LEH Foshan, ECAs offer diverse opportunities for artistic exploration, divided into upper- and lower-year groups. Popular activities include “Painting, Textile and Print Techniques” and “Art for Exhibition,” where students learn fabric printing, batik, digital sublimation, and relief printing. In the Textiles and Print ECAs, they engage in techniques like fabric painting, photo transfer, and hand embroidery. Additionally, IGCSE and A Level students benefit from after-school studio access and workshops, providing essential support for developing their coursework and exam preparation.

Art Field Trips

Art field trips at LEH Foshan are integral to students’ learning, allowing them to experience artworks and artefacts firsthand. Visits to local museums and galleries, such as the Nanfeng Kiln, Shiwan Ceramics Museum, Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy and Guangdong Museum, enhance their understanding of both historical and contemporary art. These experiences directly influence their school projects, particularly in ceramics, and broaden their knowledge of Chinese and international art. Students often engage in hands-on activities like using the pottery wheel and drawing during these enriching trips.

Art Facilities

In the ceramic’s studio, students produce sculptural and functional outcomes using clay techniques such as coil, slab, pinch, creating textures, modelling and glazing. In Sculpture they learn construction techniques using, card, paper, wire, glue-guns, binding and structural armatures in papier-mache and found/ recycled materials.

In our print room, students learn how to make mono, relief and dry-point etching prints, experimenting with printing onto different papers and fabric. Whilst in textiles, students explore hand embroidery, design, batik and Shibori dye techniques.
